Recent decisions in Congress and actions by federal agencies are putting access to health care—and abortion care in particular—at serious risk. Millions stand to lose coverage. Clinics are being defunded. Medication abortion is being targeted with misinformation and legal threats. These attacks are happening on many fronts, and it’s important we understand what is at stake.
The recently passed budget bill will result in 17 million people losing their health insurance, including coverage for essential reproductive care. Cutting Medicaid doesn’t just take away coverage—it puts basic health, pregnancy care, and even abortion access further out of reach.
The budget bill also slashed funding for Planned Parenthood health centers, not because of what federal dollars pay for, but because of the abortion care they provide (which is not covered by federal funding). That puts services like STI testing, birth control, and cancer screenings at risk, especially in communities already facing barriers to care.
Medication abortion, the most common form of abortion care, is once again under threat. Despite overwhelming evidence that it’s safe and effective, anti-abortion groups are spreading misinformation and junk science to push harmful policies and confuse the public.
Medication abortion is essential, especially for people in states with few or no clinics. These efforts are contributing to broader limits on care, even in places where abortion is still legal.
It’s been three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and ever since, attacks on reproductive freedom have only grown.
From Medicaid cuts to clinic closures and new restrictions on abortion, our rights are being chipped away in ways that feel disconnected—but they’re not. It’s all part of the same effort to push care out of reach.
