Abortion Access Now Statement on the 53rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Leaders of Abortion Access Now issued the following statement:
“The 53rd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that recognized the federal constitutional right to abortion comes at a moment of multiple, overlapping crises for healthcare, immigrants rights, and abortion access.
“Healthcare costs are skyrocketing, putting care out of reach for millions. Our communities, especially immigrants, are under attack. And abortion bans and medically unnecessary restrictions are delaying and denying care, risking patients’ lives, forcing people to travel long distances for time-sensitive health services, and pushing families into financial hardship.
“While Roe was never enough, it provided a baseline of protections for the entire country, which we lost when Roe was overturned in 2022. Since then, more than a dozen states have banned abortion entirely. This moment, and the worsening reproductive healthcare crisis of the last several years, make clear that access to abortion must be real, affordable, and equitable—without stigma, fear, or interference. Income, zip code, insurance status, or immigration status should not determine who gets care. Everyone deserves the freedom to make important, personal decisions about their bodies, their families, and their lives.”
